A simple and efficient test for Zipf ’ s law * ́

چکیده
This paper presents a simple and locally optimal test for Zipf’s law. Its use is illustrated in the case of the largest US metropolitan areas. An objection to the general relevance of that law is also presented. 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Strategy for Investments from Zipf Law(s)
We have applied the Zipf method to extract the ζ ′ exponent for seven financial indices (DAX, FTSE; DJIA, NASDAQ, S&P500; Hang-Seng and Nikkei 225), after having translated the signals into a text based on two letters. We follow considerations based on the signal Hurst exponent and the notion of a time dependent Zipf law and exponent in order to implement two simple investment strategies for su...
متن کاملZipf's Law everywhere
At the 100th anniversary of the birth of George Kingsley Zipf, one striking fact about the statistical regularity that bears his name, Zipf's law, is that it seems to appear everywhere. We may ask these questions related to the ubiquity of Zipf's law: Is there a rigorous test in fitting real data to Zipf's law? In how many forms does Zipf's law appear? In which fields are the data sets claiming...
متن کاملCitations and the Zipf-Mandelbrot’s law
A curious observation was made that the rank statistics of scientific citation numbers follows Zipf-Mandelbrot’s law. The same pow-like behavior is exhibited by some simple random citation models. The observed regularity indicates not so much the peculiar character of the underlying (complex) process, but more likely, than it is usually assumed, its more stochastic nature.
متن کاملZipf's law against the text size: a half-rational model
In this article, we consider Zipf-Mandelbrot law as applied to texts in natural languages. We present a simple model of dependence of the law on the text size, which is featured by variable power-law tail and constant ratio of the most frequent words. As a result we derive several closed formulas, which accord with empirical data qualitatively and partially quantitatively. For example, there ap...
متن کاملGeneralized (m,k)-Zipf law for fractional Brownian motion-like time series with or without effect of an additional linear trend
We have translated fractional Brownian motion (FBM) signals into a text based on two ”letters”, as if the signal fluctuations correspond to a constant stepsize random walk. We have applied the Zipf method to extract the ζ′ exponent relating the word frequency and its rank on a loglog plot. We have studied the variation of the Zipf exponent(s) giving the relationship between the frequency of occ...
